چکیده

Phosphorus is an important nutrient in animal growth that has numerous functions in cattle. Phosphorus is predominant in bone (80% of body reserves) as hydroxyapetite crystals leading to bone strength and structure. The other 20% of P in the body is in soft tissues and functions include DNA and cell structure, enzymes and enzyme kinetics, and energy storage as ATP. Clearly, P is absolutely essential and arguably one of the most important minerals to all mammals.

Grain Finishing Beef: Alternative Rations, Cattle Performance and Feeding Costs for Small Feeders

Introduction Even though many of the cattle finished in the United States are fed in large feedlots there are still many small finishing operations that lack the equipment and facilities of commercial feedlots and there are individuals that have an interest in fattening their own beef; 4-H projects or locker beef are prime examples. When finishing cattle, the nutritional requirements do not var...

Estimation of Energy Consumption and Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Transportation in Beef Cattle Production

Accounting for transportation is an important part of the life cycle analysis (LCA) of beef cattle production because it is associated with energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This paper describes the development and application of a model that estimates energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of transport in beef cattle production. The animal transport model is based on th...

Effects of tail docking on health and performance of beef cattle in confined, slatted-floor feedlots.

Tail docking of feedlot cattle is a management practice used in some confined, slatted-floor feedlots of the midwestern United States. Justification for tail docking in these management systems is to reduce tail injuries and their sequelae and improve performance, but limited evidence exists to support these claims. The primary objective of this study was to determine the effect of tail docking...

Issues concerning Mexican cattle on feedlots in the United States as reported in the United States National Animal Health Monitoring System 1994-1995 Cattle on Feed Evaluation.

Producers participating in the United States National Animal Health Monitoring System 1994-1995 Cattle on Feed Evaluation provided information on cattle of Mexican origin in their feedlot operations. Cattle of Mexican origin accounted for 8.1% of cattle placed on United States feedlots from 1 July 1993 through 30 June 1994. Of operations with a one-time capacity of 1000 or more cattle, 12.8% pl...

Systems genetics and genome-wide association approaches for analysis of feed intake, feed efficiency, and performance in beef cattle.

Feed intake, feed efficiency, and weight gain are important economic traits of beef cattle in feedlots. In the present study, we investigated the physiological processes underlying such traits from the point of view of systems genetics. Firstly, using data from 1334 Nellore (Bos indicus) cattle and 943,577 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), a genome-wide association analysis was performed ...
